In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WENTZELL, Donald Raymond - passed away peacefully on January 16, 2022, in the Halifax Infirmary, after a short illness. Don was born in Swan River (Kenville), Manitoba, on September 27, 1935. He was the youngest child of James Wentzell and Elsie Kloth. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1952 and was sent to Halifax, and from then on, he made his home in Dartmouth and Halifax. The Prairie Boy became a Bluenoser! After his Navy service, Don was employed by Canada Post as a letter carrier and postmaster. He continued to work after retirement at various jobs. He enjoyed his leisure time – he played cards with his poker buddies Ross and Sid who are waiting for him now to set up a game, I bet. Roy, Carmen, and Roger made sure he could still have a weekly Cribbage game after his health began to fail; he enjoyed bowling; and his newest pursuit, before COVID-19 hit, was carpet bowling. He is survived by his partner and caregiver, Mary Kiley, who will miss this kind and gentle giant terribly. He also leaves behind his son, James Wentzell (Jill) and his granddaughter, Rae. He is survived by his sister, Valerie (Wayne) Soura; nephew, Lindsay Wall; and niece, Robin Isaac. His four Charbonneau step-grandchildren, Erin, Nathan, Abby, and Lucy, will miss him too; for he loved them as his own. He was predeceased by his wife Penny, sister, Mary, and brother, Howard and step-siblings, Gerry, Louise and Emma. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no service or visitation. Interment will be at a later date. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Victoria General Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary for their care during Don’s time as a patient.
