In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
McGLONE, Frederick Earl (Fred / Bud) - 97 years young, of Hubley, formerly Herring Cove, passed away on December 14, 2021, in residence at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, 5 West. Born in North End Halifax, Fred was the oldest son of the late Frederick James McGlone and Marie Hutton. Losing his own father at an early age, Fred had to step up and provide for his mother and siblings. A young recruit in the Royal Canadian Navy, Fred trained at the HMCS Stadacona and served overseas on Canadian, Norwegian and British vessels, primarily the British ship “Sheffield” during the Second World War. Following the war, he married his sweetheart Evelyn McWilliams in 1946. Together, at times on a “shoestring, a wing and a prayer”, they raised eight children. Later as young grandparents, they were able to share and be involved in the upbringing of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We all enjoyed many birthday cakes together! Fred continued his Navy career after the war, serving as a Chief P.O. and Chief Warrant Officer in the Navy Reserve, travelling to Borden, Ont., in summers to train the young troops, bringing his family along for camping trips in Ontario, as well as many tenting adventures in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. His motto, – “find a beach!” In 1970, a half century of summers followed with Ev and family at their cottage in Bayswater. It became his happy place to relax, soaking up the sun and swimming in the waves of Bayswater Beach. Usually his pet fur companion “Justin” and then “Blue” sat close by his chair. In his long career, Fred was an employee with The Department of Employment and Immigration in a variety of supervisor and managerial positions. His last post before his retirement was as Manager, Special Client Needs Section, responsible for the administration of the delivery of all programs and services developed for Special Needs clients in the Nova Scotia Region. He was responsible for Departmental Vocational Rehabilitation programs for the mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged in Nova Scotia, including liaison with the provincial and private agencies in these fields. Fred received many medals, awards and accreditations for his military and public service but they were quietly tucked away, as was his modest way. Outside of work, Fred’s interests were in drama and theatre, radio and classic Hollywood movies. TCM was his favorite channel! In his younger years, Fred was a member of the Nova Scotia Theatre Arts Guild, performing in stage plays at Neptune and playing Santa Claus on the radio. His beautiful speaking and singing voice was one of his talents. Fred is survived by children, Cheryl Kalyshov, Mary McGlone-LeBlanc, Evelyne Kervin, Valerie (Doug) Laffin, Bryan (Barb) McGlone, Barry (Danette) McGlone; and many special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Donna; son, Anthony; sons-in-law, Ed Kalyshov and Kim Kervin; sister, Marie; and brothers, Arnold and James McGlone. A graveside family service will be held at a later date in Herring Cove. Our family would like to thank the Nursing, Medical, Recreational, Dietary and Spiritual Care Staff and volunteers (5 West) for their excellent care and compassion over the last several years. Dad was able to go to mass, play bocce ball, sing in the choir, paint pictures and crafts, and especially play bingo, always winning a prize! Special thanks to Susan Reid and Andrew Cooke, for their spiritual blessings, and Musical Therapists Alexandra Moir and Eric Skinner, and hospital Chaplains during his last few days with us.
