ABS, Montford John - Passed away peacefully on January 20, 2022 at 88 years of age at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, Ontario. Monty was born on November 8, 1933 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to John 'Bud' and Dorcas 'Dot' Abs. Monty moved with his parents to Port Colborne, Ontario then during the second world war to Fort Erie. After the war they moved to Kitchener as his mother bought the 'Sally Shop' hair salon on King Street East in Kitchener. Monty attended elementary school in Kitchener and then attended high school at Luther College in Regina.

Monty served with the Royal Canadian Navy for five years until the end of 1956 and then moved back to Kitchener to help his mother run her K-W School of Hairdressing. After his mother's retirement from the hairstyling school business, Monty continued as sole proprietor and expanded the business with schools in K-W, Guelph, Brantford and Barrie. Monty served a term as President of the Canadian Association of Cosmetology Schools. He traveled around Europe and the United States as their representative.

While in the navy and stationed in Halifax Monty met and married Audrey (Dunn). They had five children; Cyril, Penny, Heather (Dean), Murray and Lynn.

Monty married Ruth Jane (Gilchrist) on December 28, 1983. They resided in Oro township. Monty and Jane shared many adventures on the road and on water with family and close friends - on boats, snowmobiles, ATV's and motorcycles. They spent many winters in Vero Beach Florida and were involved in the community and yacht club.

Monty was always involved in sports, first with Junior B hockey in Kitchener. He was also an avid skier and was a charter member of the KW Squash Club.

Monty was predeceased by his son Cyril on September 29, 1993.

Remembered fondly by sister in laws, brother in laws, many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Thank you to the staff at RVH in Barrie, especially Catherine Ruiz-Gomar, spiritual care clinician, Betty Ann Whelan (manager of the respiratory unit) and the many nurses and doctors that helped Monty in such a wonderful and caring way.

Memorial donations can be made to the Veterans through your local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. (Simcoe County News 02 Feb 2022)
