In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SHIRLEY, William Hugh (Bill) - Born in Thunder Bay Ontario, the oldest of six children, Bill joined the Canadian Navy at age 17 to help support his single mother and the other five children. It was on a furlough home when he met Elaine whom he married in 1955 and spent 67 years adoring. Bill and Elaine welcomed their daughter Leanne (1959) and son Gord (1962). Bill is a proud UVic Alumni and dedicated his career to teaching in the Elementary School system in Victoria, including Marigold, Glanford, Margaret Jenkins and Craigflower. In 1970, he realised his dream of owning land and purchased a hobby farm in Central Saanich. He loved being a farmer, raising animals and lovingly restoring the 1910 farmhouse their family would call home. Bill found his joy in being a Nono and went to all of Paige and Jenna's fastball games, band recitals and musicals. He loved his granddaughters deeply and was a huge presence in their lives. Upon retirement, Bill and Elaine built their home in Brentwood Bay and loved being on the water- whether it was on their boat in the bay or cruising to ports around the world. He curled at Victoria Curling Club and was a member of Ardmore Men's Club (with a hole in one on the 5th!). Bill spent the remaining years of his life with his love, Elaine, in Sidney Care Home. He will be missed dearly by his immediate family: Leanne, husband Robin, Gordon, wife Jude, and granddaughters, Paige and Jenna. Friends and family will treasure the memories they had together. Thank you to Allison and the team at Sidney Care Home for their thoughtful and kind care of our loved ones. There will be a family celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. (The Victoria Times Colonist 22 Jan 2022)
