Died: 01 Dec 2021

FORTUNE, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, CANADA - The last known survivor of the fatal sinking of a Newfoundland ferry during the Second World War has died.

Hedley Lake was from the small town of Fortune, on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula, and served with Britain’s Royal Navy.

He was celebrated as the last remaining survivor of the sinking of the S.S. Caribou ferry by a German U-boat in the early hours of Oct. 14, 1942.

The Heritage Newfoundland and Labrador website says the ferry was hit a few dozen kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland by a lone torpedo fired by a German U-69 submarine.

The site says of the 237 people aboard the ferry, only 101 survived.

Lake’s daughter-in-law, Eva Lake, said in an interview that he died peacefully in hospital on Wednesday evening at the age of 103 and that funeral services will be held Sunday. (The Canadian Press 02 Dec 2021)
