LESSLIE, Barbara Mary (née BISHOPRIC) - Quietly at the age of 87 in Kingston, Ontario at the Rosewood Retirement Residence on March 28, 2012. Barbara is survived by her children Catherine Lesslie Jeffery, James Lesslie and Jane Lesslie; her grandchildren Jennifer Lesslie, Rachel Lesslie, Sarah Lesslie, Stephanie Jeffery and Cameron Jeffery; her sister Betsy Briggs, her-son-in law Stephen Jeffery and her daughter-in-law Brenda Lesslie, and predeceased by her husband William Lesslie in 1979, and her parents Otis and Vera (nee Sowden) Bishopric.

Born November 24, 1924 in Edmonton, Barbara moved with her parents to Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of one. Barbara's life was ultimately framed by her time as a Signaller with the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS #4093) during World War ll, which she joined while still in her teens. She met her husband Bill while in the signal tower in Halifax, and after the war happily maintained her ties to the Navy as a navy wife, which took her and Bill to Ottawa, Halifax, Victoria, Washington, DC. and finally Kingston. Barbara will also be remembered for her more than four decades as a dedicated volunteer with the Kingston General Hospital Auxiliary, serving in various capacities including Gift Shop Convenor, and with the sanctuary guild of St. James Anglican Church. She ultimately returned to her naval roots as a member of, and as President of the WRENS Association of Kingston. Her children are enormously grateful for the ceaselessly kind care she received from all the staff at Rosewood, and particularly the nursing staff Kelly, Ron, Emily and Pauline. Barbara will be dearly missed by her good friend Bette Davis, whose devoted friendship to Barbara is most appreciated by the family.

A Memorial Service for Barbara will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 10 Union Street, Kingston, Ontario on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with reception following in the Church Hall. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society, St. James Anglican Church or the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston would be gratefully accepted. (Edmonton Journal 30 Mar 2012)
