In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HARRIS, John Ward, Captain - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Ward Harris. John was born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, and left home to make his way in the world at the age of 12. He joined the Canadian Navy while still a teenager, and was proud to have been present at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He led a seafaring life, having worked on several Navy vessels, oil tankers and tug boats; he then spent his later career working for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as the captain of the Chebucto and the Cygnus. John was predeceased in 2011 by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary (Perham) Harris. He is survived by his four children: Corinne Cookson, Dan (Dorothy) Harris, Tina (Jim) Driscoll and David (Kelly) Harris, as well as grandchildren Stephen Cookson, Melissa and Laura Harris, Meaghan and James Driscoll , and John and Ciara Harris, and great-grandchildren Isabella and Ethan Summerfeld. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Jessie Williams. In accordance with John’s final wishes, cremation and internment have taken place. There will be an informal celebration of John’s life for family and friends on Thursday, October 28th from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at 75 Rockingstone Road in Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
