BAKER, Donald Richard - Passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Veteran's Center on August 21, 2022 at the age of 99 years. Son of the late George Alfred Baker, and the late Elsie Lillian Cockshutt Baker. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evalyn Cleland McKay Baker; his sisters, Mary H. Seagram (late R. David Seagram) and Nancy I. Lynn (late James F. Lynn); and brothers, Harvey C. Baker and Langton G. Baker (late Marguerite B. Chase). He was also predeceased by his nephew, Charly A. Lynn (Sandra). Uncle Don will be sadly missed by nephews, Alan Wainwright (Pauline), Fraser Lynn (Amy) and Langton Lynn (Carol); nieces, Jackie Loach (late Ken Loach), Daphne Seagram, Kathryn Lynn, Deborah Seagram (Carl Wehniainen); and grandnephews and grandnieces, Jennifer, Kim, Susan, Alex, Erika, James, Elsie, Sarah, Baker, Jackson, David, Megan, Alana, Brittne, Justin and Rachel. Don was raised in Toronto and educated at Upper Canada College and then Trinity College at the University of Toronto. Don joined the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII and was first stationed in Canada, and then overseas to Ireland until the end of the war. Don met his future wife, Evalyn Cleland, at a Trinity College reunion and were married in 1970 in Toronto. After spending a few years in Toronto, they moved to Oakville and finally settled in Orangeville until Evalyn's death in 2014. Don and Evalyn had many happy years together and especially enjoyed spending time at their farm in Mount Forest. Don enjoyed a career in the insurance industry until his retirement. He was a great lover of dogs, his garden and shared a passion for art and antiques with his wife Evalyn. Don will always be remembered for his kindness, gentle nature and his laughter. He was truly a special man filled with such a loving heart and joyous spirit.A special thank you to the Sunnybrook Veteran's Center staff who provided our uncle with wonderful care in his later years. We are forever grateful. Funeral Service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 14 Cemetery Rd., Orangeville on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. A tree will be planted in memory of Donald in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 20th Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. (The Globe and Mail 02 Sep 2022)
