CLARKE, Winona Annie (Nonie) (née SHORT) - Our cherished mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Winona Annie Clarke (Short) passed away December 12, 2012, at age 89 at Sun Pointe Village in Kelowna, BC.

Nonie was predeceased by her husband Arthur (2000) and her six siblings, Doris Campbell, Enid Adelung, Edmund Short, Priscilla Grassick, Marion Merryweather and twin sister Wilma Sokoloff.

Nonie will be lovingly remembered by her four children Carol, Derek (Lisa), Fred (Lou Ann), Andrea Neil (Mark) and her beloved grandchildren Adam Neil, Kyle Neil, Scott Clarke, Sean Oldford, Emily Clarke, Thomas Clarke, Michelle Clarke, Jordan Neil, Melanie Clarke and Graeme Clarke. She leaves behind her special nieces and nephews, William Grassick, Edmund Grassick, Rilla Carlson, Shirley Cann, William Sokoloff, Diane Sokoloff, David Sokoloff, Susan Sokoloff, Maria Sokoloff and Frank Merryweather.

Nonie was born in Oak River, Manitoba, the youngest and twin daughter of Annie Priscilla (Cunningham) and William Short. Nonie was especially proud to have served her country in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Services (“Wrens”) and participated in various Wrens events for many years. After the war, Nonie became an executive secretary until her marriage to Art and their move from Winnipeg to Alberta. Nonie returned to the workforce in Calgary after raising their children until her retirement in 1990.

Nonie loved music and singing, painting, bridge, swimming, dancing and gardening. She enjoyed all of nature but was especially fond of birds and wouldn’t dream of turning away a stray dog.

Nonie lived a long and happy life and although challenged by Alzheimer’s disease for over twelve years, she always offered a kind smile or a gentle touch.

The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of the staff of the Belgo Community at Sun Pointe Village for their kindness, caring and compassionate support of Nonie over the past almost three years. We will be forever grateful.

Special thanks are extended to Dr. Tara Sebulsky for her diligent care of Nonie and to Dr. Bernie Lewke. We would like to acknowledge Becky Dennison for being such a wonderful friend to Nonie especially during the past two months.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 10:30 am, at the Town Hall, Sun Pointe Village, 700 Rutland Road North, Kelowna.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a donation in Nonie’s memory to the Alzheimer Society (alzheimer.ca) or Sun Pointe Village (Music System), 700 Rutland Road North, Kelowna, BC V1X 7W8. (Springfield Funeral Home)
