Petty Officer Writer, WRCNS

Died: 27 Aug 2021, Toronto, Ontario

BEST, Kathleen (Kay) (née McCormack) - passed away peacefully at the North York General Hospital on August 27, 2021 in her 100th year. Beloved wife of the late Fred Best for 50 years and survived by her children Marlene Best (Ron Chapman) of Ottawa and Doug Best of Toronto. Fondly remembered by three grandchildren, Jessica Best (Tom), Sarah Best (Mitch) and Adam Best (Bianca), as well as her niece Gail McCormack (Ben) and nephew Jim McCormack (Kelly). Kay was born and grew up in Montreal. She proudly served as a Petty Officer Writer in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) stationed in Washington, DC from 1942 - 1946. Throughout her life she travelled all over the world for work in her late 20s with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and later for pleasure and adventure with Fred. List maker and organizer extraordinaire, she kept her family and numerous organizations on track throughout her life. Kay was a dedicated Brown Owl in the Girl Guide Movement in St. Bruno, Quebec. Always on the lookout for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, Kay channelled her love for language into volunteer work teaching English as a Second Language to new Canadians, for which she was awarded the Ontario Bicentennial Medal in 1984. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the healthcare staff at Amica Bayview Gardens who supported Kay with kindness and care during the difficult months of pandemic isolation. A memorial celebration of Kay's life will be held Thursday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at Morley Bedford Funeral Services, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, ON. Virtual attendance via Zoom is available. A private cremation has taken place. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Kay's name to INDSPIRE (The Globe and Mail 04 Sep 2021)
