Died: 03 May 2011, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia

 

CHAMPION, Edwin Fraser (Ed) - 86, formerly of Lingan Road, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.

 

He had resided at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Nursing Home in Glace Bay for a short time prior to his death.

 

Born in Sydney, Ed was a son of the late Horatio and Margaret (Cuff) Champion.

 

Ed was employed at Sydney Steel for 42 years and after retiring spent much of his spare time at his cottage in Englishtown.

 

For many years he was an avid bowler and a faithful Royal Canadian Legion member, branch 128. He was also involved in the Naval Veterans Association, having served in the Second World War, in the Canadian Navy.

 

Ed enjoyed people and had numerous friends and associates. He also donated much of his time to volunteer projects such as Remembrance Day events, Royal Canadian Legion activities and helping people in need. He will be truly missed by those who knew him and loved him.

 

Ed is survived by his wife, Ann, of 59 years; his sons, Charles (Susan), Sydney, and Keith (Kristen), Aiken, S.C.; brother, Bill (Sydney); sisters, Vida Anthony, Lantz, N.S., and Pauline MacDonald, Halifax; grandchildren, Joshua, Amy MacGillivrary and Drew. He is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Abagale (Abby) MacGillivrary.

 

Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by a brother, Melton.

 

Visitation for the late Edwin ‘Ed’ Fraser Champion will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, May 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Rev. Maggie Coleman officiating.

 

Reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 128, Whitney Pier. A private interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Garden, Sydney at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Church. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
