John Kenneth Percival McDowell

RCN

Born: 1942          Died: 2021

McDowell, John Kenneth Percival - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John, after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 78.

John was born in Toronto, Ont., after his mother immigrated to Canada from Britain, subsequently failing to join her husband Jack (RAF) in Nassau, due to his reassignment to Sri Lanka. After the war and loss of his dad, they settled in Montreal, QC., where John grew up with his four siblings. Following in his father's military footsteps, John joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving his country for 4 years, which granted him the opportunity to sail to many regions across the Atlantic. After leaving the Navy, he moved to Thompson in 1969, where he worked underground at Inco for 30 years, retiring in 2000. He spent his retirement and the remainder of his life in Thompson, raising his family and doing more of the things he enjoyed. John was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, shooting, and fishing with countless summer days spent fishing along the Grass River with his family.

He will forever be remembered for his booming voice, sardonic sense of humour, reliability, and aptitude to help out wherever needed. He had a strong work ethic, a thirst for knowledge, and deep respect and understanding for nature, qualities that have greatly influenced his children, to which they will forever be grateful.

John will be remembered by his partner of 33 years Gianna, two children Robyn and Russel, sisters Sharon, Marilyne and Christine, and brother Tony.

Predeceased by his mother Peggy, father Jack and stepfather Anthony.

Cremation already has taken place, and a private service will be held at a later date to honour John. (The Thompson Citizen 09 Aug 2021)
