Albert was born in Welland in 1926 to Nicola and Letizia (Sciarra) Saltarelli and was lovingly cared for following his mother’s death by his step-mother Nancy (Trivisonno). He proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1945 and was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 4. He served on Welland City Council from 1962 to 1976 and from 1991 to 1994. Albert was a successful businessman who expended much energy giving back to the community. He loved nature and was actively involved in conservation efforts for the region. Albert loved to cook and make wine. He and Bridie were warm and generous hosts to friends and family during their 59 years together.
During his last few months, Albert was well cared for by the staff of the 300 wing at Rapelje Lodge and, in particular, by close family friend Kathleen MacKenzie. Friends may call at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland on Sunday, May 4 from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of this wonderful man’s life will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 4 on Morningstar Avenue in Welland on Monday, May 5 at 11 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region or Rapelje Lodge would be greatly appreciated.
Our family has been truly blessed to call Albert our father and grandfather. Throughout his last days, we continued to make beautiful memories. We are at peace knowing that he is home.
On Friday, May 2, 2008, our family bade a final farewell to an incredible father, grandfather and great grandfather, Albert Saltarelli. We are grateful that he spent his remaining months well cared for by the staff at Rapelje Lodge; their support and comfort during the week preceding Dad's death will always be remembered. We are thankful to Chris Chappelle and the staff of J.J. Patterson's for their patience and guidance. We were touched by friends who shared fond memories at Dad's memorial service. Dad would have been truly honoured by the involvement of the Legion, in particular the tribute provided by his fellow legion members. Flowers and generous donations to Rapelje Lodge and the Alzheimer Society were greatly appreciated.
Dad's journey throughout the last 4 years was a challenging one. Without the dedicated support of our friend Joe Barkovich, our family may not have had the opportunity to share fully in Dad's final months in Welland. Dad's love for family, friends, community and nature has left the world a better place and wonderful legacy that we will strive to maintain.
