In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HIGGS, Gary John - 54, Avonport. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax as the result of a motorcycle accident. Born in Bristol, England in 1958 and moved to Canada in 1964, growing up in around Ontario. In 1980 Gary joined the Navy as a Marine Engineer (Stoker), where he served Canada for 26 years. While posted in Edmonton, he was a volunteer firefighter in Bon Accord, Alberta. He took great pride in volunteering with the fire department and he was a great prankster with his ship-mates depending if you were on the receiving end or not. Gary took great enjoyment in the harmless antics that helped break up the boredom of a long patrol. In 2006 he moved back to Nova Scotia, retired from the Navy and settled in Avonport. He worked at Kent in New Minas until fall 2012. Besides his family, his passion was his Harley both while riding and personalizing it to his taste. He is survived by his daughters, Holly (Brian) Edmonton, Sherrie (Antonio) Edmonton, his son Jeremy Ontario, Lindsay Ontario and sister: Lisa, Bon Accord, Alberta; 3 grandchildren, 1 grandson and 1 nephew. He was predeceased by his parents John and Rosalind Higgs, his first wife Wanda (Parker) and his companion Mary (Baker). Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Gary’s life will be held May 17 in the Bonnie/Maggie Room at the Atlantic Fleet Club at CFB Halifax from 11AM to 1 PM. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Association of Canada or Camp Hill Hospital. As was Dad’s way he was always thinking of others and his last act of kindness came by signing a donor card, where total strangers now have a new lease on life, and Dad would be so very proud of that.
