CLEMENTS, Albert Sidney (Bert) - It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Albert "Bert" Sidney Clements of Dartmouth and Scotsburn. He passed away peacefully on December 22, 2020 at the age of 100 ... just two months from his 101st birthday in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII in Halifax where he had been residing. Born in London, Ont., on February 16, 1920 he was a son of the late William T. Clements and Aime Hardisty (of London, England). Like his father William who had served in the First World War, Albert volunteered to serve his country in 1939 at the start of the Second World War and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. As a leading seaman and gunner, Albert spent 40 months crisscrossing the North Atlantic on convoy duty. He was, if not the last, then one of the last sailors, of Canada's wartime corvette navy. During a brief "shore leave" Albert met the love of his life Doris Margaret Devanney of Halifax. Determined to marry her, he arranged for her visit to Newfoundland where they were wed in St. John's in June, 1943. Upon retiring from the RCN and after spending a few years to Canada Post, Albert accepted a position with the Department of External Affairs. He held this position for 14 years, being posted to various capitals around the world, until his final retirement. Albert had varied interests, from stone polishing to flying. He obtained his pilot's license first on pontoons and later on wheels. While residing at Shannon Park he took a keen interest in Scouting, first as Leader of a Sea Scout troop and later Boy Scouts Canada. A man of many talents, Albert once surprised his family by building a utility trailer to hold a tent and camping gear; thus enabling him to take Doris and their three sons on a camping trip to Prince Edward Island. Sadly, Albert was predeceased by his wife Doris on December 23, 2003. Albert was the last living member of his family which included his sister, Aime Lillian, and brothers, Bill, George, PJ, Charlie, and Bob. He will be sadly missed by his sons, Ronald (Jackie), Wilmot; Gregory, Cambridge, Ont., and Richard(Gloria) Palma, Majorca; grandchildren, Sean, Chris, Karen, Kristine, Katherine, Lara and Albert; great-grandchildren, Liam, Aiden, Chloe, Cailean and Gracie, Ryan and Jacob; and grandnephew, Ed Clements of Toronto, Ont. Albert's ashes remain in the care of the Padre, CFB Halifax (Stadacona) for burial at a later date. (Halifax Chronicle-Harold 24 Mar 2021)
