BARTHEL, Roland Walter (Rolly) - It is with deep sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Roland (Rolly) Walter Barthel on March 19, 2021, at the age of 82.

After a sudden and brief battle with his heart, he passed away in the company of family, knowing he was not alone and that he was very much loved. Rolly is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joan Barthel and family members, Bonnie-Lynn Hunter and Brie-Lynn; daughters, Suzanne (Paul Bormann, Reece, Erika and Spencer) and Deborah (Chuck McManamen, Keith and Fiona). Rolly was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Lottie; his son Derek, stepson Drew, and his brother Eric.

Rolly was born and raised in Winnipeg, graduating from St. James Collegiate. Rolly spent his early years in the Navy in Victoria, BC. Part of Rolly's adventures included managing the Jolly Friar Restaurant in the Norwood Hotel. His life passion for 30 plus years was his business: Rolly's Coffee Service. In those days he was an avid golfer, played racquetball at the YMCA and was a member of the Canoe Club. After retirement, Rolly loved swimming at the Rady Center and loved spending time outdoors at a local park visiting his animal friends and feeding the gophers and deer.

Before Covid, he was a regular volunteer at the Winnipeg Humane Society as a cat cuddler. Rolly also loved working for Adesa Auctions, driving cars down to the US border with a crew of guys making great friends along the way. He was the entertainment committee on the van ride home. His road stories and humour are legendary.

Papa or Opa Rolly loved getting together with his family. We will miss his larger than life smile, his chuckle, his great humour, his unconditional love and his colourful fashion.

Special thanks to the amazing staff at St. Boniface Hospital who provided such loving care to Rolly.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date for family and friends, perhaps his birthday July 21, 2021.

Donations can be made to your favourite animal shelter or support group.
