MANNESS, Kenneth Edward - After a long illness, bravely endured, Ken died peacefully on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Glacier View Lodge, Comox BC. Ken was 81 years old. Ken was pre-deceased by father, Tom, mother, Betty, brothers Jerry and Tom, sister Valerie (Larry) and brother-in-law Reg Waggoner. Ken was the beloved husband of Jean, cherished father to Teressa (Dan) and Doug (Carla), loving and devoted grandfather to Cassidy and Hunter, Tristiana and Kolton, step-grandfather to Jessie, Taylor and Jake. Dear brother to Don Manness (Dorice) dear brother-in-law to Sue, Bob, Dick, Sally and Brenda, and a special uncle to many family members. Ken will also be missed by a large group of extended family and friends. Ken was born and raised in Winnipeg and at the tender age of 17 joined the Navy to see the world. It was truly the start of a lifelong journey, gathering friends and building family through countless adventures along the way. Fate stationed Ken in Victoria where he met and fell in love with Roslyn Jean Tuckey, for whom he quickly left the Navy. Ken married Jean (and all the Tuckey family!) in 1962. After a few years of playful marriage, dancing, partying, and travelling with friends, Ken and Jean started adding their own family members with daughter, Teressa and son, Doug. For the next half-century Ken was a devoted father, uncle, brother, son, and friend to all of those in his life. A proud but also humble man, he cherished all the people around him. He did not talk much about feelings, but he had a way of teasing people in just a way they knew he cared -- often an inside joke shared with each person that let them know how special they were. Ken preferred deeds to words anyhow and was happy to help whenever asked or otherwise he just volunteered. He was not too worried about people returning the favour, but he was blessed with many friends who quickly showed up for any need. If Ken were writing this, it would not be so much about him. He would simply thank the people from every part of his life, the many lifelong friends from every adventure: the Navy, playing hockey with "the Phantoms", wine making with neighbours and family, camping and fishing with the many groups: Campbell Lake, Yellow point, Gabriola Island, Christina Lake, Quadra Island, to name a few, sailing out of Sidney, skiing in Comox, playing pool at "The Legion", travelling in the US, Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, spending time with the woodworking club in Comox, and of course the many events with family and friends. He would tell you how much he enjoyed sharing a great meal, and how happy he was to cook for you or eat what you cooked! You would laugh together about the silly times; he would tell you what matters in life is the people. The family wishes to thank the loving and dedicated staff at Glacier View Lodge for the wonderful care they gave to Ken. You accommodated our family gracefully during this challenging time and shared stories of Ken that let us know even when most ill his spirit shone through - sharing a sandwich on the midnight shift or placing a hand on a troubled person's shoulder. A celebration of Ken's life will be planned for when people can safely gather, likely the summer of 2021. Donations may be made in Ken's name to the Alzheimer's society or a charity of your choice.
