BARRY, John Robert - of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully on January 27th, 2021 at the Halifax Infirmary. John was born on December 4th, 1943 in Port Alberni, BC. His mother Devota Kilcoyne, father Frank Barry, and brother James Barry have predeceased him. John grew up in Victoria, BC and in Toronto, ON. He attended University of Toronto and briefly joined the Navy reserves, leading to a lifetime interest and enjoyment of all things seafaring. He travelled abroad as a passenger on a freighter ship, leading him to land travels from Lebanon, through Eastern and Western Europe. In the mid 1970’s, John moved to Nova Scotia where he lived out his life in Coleman Cove south of St. Margaret’s Bay. John loved living by the sea and had a bird’s eye view of whales, dolphins and sea birds and the many hurricane events hitting the south coast. Following 30 years working at Dalhousie University Instructional Media Services he retired on the Cove in 2007 and moved to Halifax in 2016. John is survived by cousin Christine Seidl and Benoit Richard, and their children Alexandre, Philippe and Stephane Richard of Montreal, QC, who have fond memories of John’s visits to favorites like Montreal’s Chinatown, St. Joseph’s Oratory, organ concerts at the Notre Dame Basilica and Schwartz’s Deli. He is also survived by cousin Peter Seidl and Karen Katz and their children Zach and Jeff Seidl of Oakland, CA. John featured prominently in the short fictional films created by the younger cousins and will be remembered for his humorous and uncritical contributions to their amateur productions. The many cousins from the Barry, Campbell and Kilcoyne families who survive him will also miss John. He will be missed by his dear friend and work colleague of many years, Margaret White of Halifax, NS and by his long time friend, Rizpah Morrow of Brooklyn, NY. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Halifax Infirmary for their care and compassion. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
