MOIR, Bruce Broderick - PMP, Navy ret'd. The sun has set and the landscape of our lives has forever changed; it is with broken hearts that we share the unexpected passing at home of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, nephew, uncle and great friend on Saturday, January 23, 2021.

Bruce was born on September 16, 1960 to the late Roderick and Arvella (nee Purdy) Moir in Dartmouth, NS.

Bruce was the most loved husband and best friend of Lisa (nee Hartlen); a fiercely proud and loving Dad to his 3 sons: Christopher and his wife Crystal of Douglas, ON; Andrew of Carleton Place, ON; and Stuart and his wife Melissa of Lanark Highlands, ON; and his two daughters: Abigail Jane and Rachel Elizabeth both at home; a loving Poppa to his grandsons: Caden and Colton Moir (Christopher) and granddaughter, Madelynn Moir (Stuart). Bruce is also survived by his sisters: Pamela Hatton of Springhill, NS; Rodanna (John) Oakes of Shediac, NB; Beth Moir of Debert, NS; and his brother, Richard (Dawn) of Lawrencetown, NS. Bruce is also survived by Lisa’s parents, Allan and Carol Ann Hartlen of Kentville, NS, and her brother, Peter (Laurie) of Beaconsfield, QC; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roderick and Arvella, he was predeceased by an infant brother, Broderick, and his older sister, Margery.

In 1977 Bruce joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he proudly served his country as a Naval officer for 20 years plus 1 day on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts while seeing the world. Bruce never spoke of the bad things he may have encountered but loved to tell stories of the fun and often unbelievable adventures he had sailing the world, including tea with the Queen, sharing a room with Farley Mowatt, a sailing race to Hawaii, calling his mother from a car phone in San Francisco, and the ever popular being in Virginia Beach training when Top Gun came out. It was during his time in the Navy that he met his first wife (Patricia Bernicky) and they welcomed their 3 sons into the world, eventually settling in Carleton Place, ON where he retired as Lieutenant-Commander in1998. After retiring from the military, Bruce started a new career as a project management professional joining LGS Group in 1999 where he lead the Maritime Forces Atlantic year 2000 conversion; it was on this project that he met Lisa and their adventure began…

For 20 years Bruce and Lisa built a life together that started with a house in Hammonds Plains and ended with a home in Kings Head, NS where Abigail and Rachel completed their family in the most spectacular way. They came to New Glasgow where Bruce joined Sobeys Inc. as a Project Manager, Director and Vice President for many years. With time comes change and Bruce decided it was time for something different so decided to start his own consulting firm taking 2 engagements in Quebec, first with SNC Lavalin and for the last year at Davie Shipyard where he forged many friendships.

More than anything, Bruce loved his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and he found his happy place when the family built their home on the hill looking out over the Northumberland Strait. It was here that he felt most at home and was quite happy never to leave, unless it was to go do something with his girls whom he made sure had a strong work ethic from cleaning their rooms to mucking stalls. He knew nothing about horses, but was both Abigail and Rachel’s biggest fan; he would gladly go to the barn or shows to watch them ride and compete, his only complaint was the smell. He also became a huge basketball fan, first with Abigail and more recently with Rachel.

Bruce would do anything for his family and they loved him more than words can say. We are blessed in that we have so many wonderful memories from trips to Walt Disney World, Cruises to the Caribbean and a beach vacation to Turks and Caicos. Bruce’s family extended far beyond those he was related to by blood and there were many laughter-filled celebrations, game nights and vacations with the greatest friends who became his chosen family: Kevin, Jo-Anne and Kaitlin (Colin) Russell; Tom, Suzanne and Jenna Makin; Brian, Angela, Haileigh and Hannah MacLeod; Mike, Natalie and Theo Carroll and so many more great friends.

Never one at a loss for words, he would gladly share his wisdom, which was so uniquely Bruce, to the younger generation. Over the years he was mentor to many, a hockey fan to the Crushers who lived under his roof, a handyman, no job was too big or too small and then there was his obsession with Top Gun.

As a family we would like to thank the members of the Little Harbour Fire Department, Emergency Health Services and the RCMP for all that they did for Bruce on Saturday. To our many friends and family we don’t know where we would be right now without the time you have given, the food you have prepared and the love you have given; there are no words to express the gratitude we have for all of you.

At this time, due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life and interment of remains will be held in the summer on date to be determined. If you wish to honor Bruce’s memory, in lieu of donations, please consider contributing to the Bruce Moir Education Fund at Scotiabank (PO Box 369, New Glasgow, NS, B2H 5E5) in support of Abigail and Rachel. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
