YOUNG, Simon John - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Simon John (Si) Young. Born to Simon and Elizabeth Young, in Calgary. He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 40 years, Patricia, in 1993. He is survived by his sisters Kay (Bill) Neale of Australia and Pat (Dorsey) Lockie of Calgary, his sister-in-law Jessie (Bob) Young, his son Rick (Lois) and his daughter Sharon (Tony) Shaw, all of Victoria. He is also survived by his niece Leslie Wood, who was more like a daughter to him. She was a pillar of support for him when he lost Mom and remained a constant force in his life. Her support never waned, even throughout the many challenging times dealing with his dementia. He so enjoyed her frequent visits, and in many ways, she kept a sense of normalcy in his life. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews all important to him in so many ways, as well as long term friends Bev and Gerry Morin. Dad left Calgary in the early 50's to join the Navy, where he served for 30 years, retiring in 1982. Over the years, Dad loved fishing, fly tying, camping and of course woodworking. In later years he tried his hand at blacksmithing and welding. Dad was never happier than taking his 5th wheel up to Piney Point in the Caribou for the start of fishing and camping season. He also loved "the family camping trips" up island. Again, as with our mother's passing in 1993, we would like to thank his neighbour and friends Ken and Joyce Richardson and their family. Their unwavering support filled a big void in Dad's life after losing Mom, including him in so many of their family events, Sunday dinners, birthdays, weddings, or just an evening cocktail. Dad was lucky enough to live in a neighbourhood where all the neighbours watch out for each other. Many thanks to each one of you. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of The Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead. Their care and compassion were nothing short of outstanding…what a team! A special thanks to Sonia, the nurse on duty in the days proceeding Dad's passing. With her care, compassion, and understanding, she guided us through this most difficult journey. She truly has a gift. There will not be a service, as it is not safe to do so, during these challenging times. Dad, rest in peace, you will remain in our hearts forever!  (Victoria Times Colonist 13 Feb 2021)
