In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
KOBELT, Charles Alexander - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear dad, Charles (Chuck / Charlie) Kobelt on January 29, 2021, attended by his family at Grace Village. He joins his cherished wife, Alice, who passed away 11 years ago and has been waiting for him to continue their journey together.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Florence, his sister Dolly, and his brothers Harry and James.
Cherished father of Keith (Claudette), Donald (Ann), Mary (Mitchell), Jo-Anne (Louis) and Charles (Kelley); beloved grandfather of Christopher, Heather, Alexander, Lillian and Frankie; great-grandchildren Ophelia, Finnegan and James. He will also be missed by many relatives and friends. He leaves to mourn Maureen Bean whom he married in his later years.
Charles lived a life of service to others. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the Prince David during World War II. He was a 76-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 68 of St. Lambert. We recall chilly November Sundays watching Dad march proudly in the Remembrance Day parades.
Charles was a former President of the Lennoxville-Ascot Historical and Museum Society, active in the Optimist Club and Friendship Days. Leading by example he demonstrated the importance of community service to his children. It is telling that he was a member of the Optimist Club as he was the eternal optimist-always walking on the sunny side of the street.
Dad loved to sing in church choirs, with the St. Lambert Barbershop Chorus and in numerous musicals where his booming voice and sense of humor served him well. His love of music was passed on to his children and grandchildren and he frequently boasted of their accomplishments.
He was a man of many interests including golf and curling. His passion for gardening was passed onto his children. In his later years, he especially enjoyed tending to the Amesbury garden and planting marigolds in his children's gardens despite their annual protest.
We fondly remember his talent for leading a pack of unruly children in crack-the-whip at Bishop's arena, showing off his skill at stand-up tobogganing, letting us win or cleaning our clocks in Monopoly, happy hour Scrabble with Mom and his infamous skateboard run down High Street (as a senior citizen).
On Saturday afternoons Dad could be found cheering for his Bishop's Gaiters both home and away. He had a special talent for taunting opposing coaches and referees. He was the proud recipient of the prestigious Ray Almond Award, given to a dedicated member of the Bishop's athletic community who rises above expectations. Who else but Dad could be known as "Poppa" to so many athletes and alumni?
The Kobelt family would like to thank all the staff at the Grace Village for their dedicated and loving care for Charles over the past 12 years. You are all true heroes and angels. To honor the excellent care and compassion provided to our dad, a donation to the Grace Village Foundation would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. (The Sherbrooke Record 04 Feb 2021)
