Charles Douglas (Doug) Ritchie

RITCHIE, Charles Douglas (Doug) - 90 of Dartmouth passed away in the Dartmouth General Hospital January 20, 2012, with his daughter Rev. Nancy Ritchie at his bedside. Doug was a son of the late Allen and Lila (Hutt) Ritchie. He was a resident of Dartmouth his entire life, he grew up in Woodside . From school he worked at Fairey Aviation in Eastern Passage, then a period in the Merchant Marine. Doug entered the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, serving in Shelburne, Halifax, Sydney and Newfoundland on overseas convoy duty. He survived being torpedoed in October 1944. After a time working at Halifax Shipyards and D.A. Cummings he started his own business of heating and contracting. Doug operated Doug’s Sheet Metal for thirty years. He was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party. He was a bowler and bowled in several leagues. He was a member of the United Church of Canada, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star # 51 and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Somme Branch # 31, Dartmouth. After serving ten years on the Dartmouth City Council, he sat on the boards of Housing Commission, Liquor License Board and twenty nine years on the Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home Board as Vice Chairman. Doug is survived by his wife of 69 years Hazel (Holden) Ritchie and three daughters, Louise (Jack) Hallett, Dartmouth, their family, Jennifer, Gerald, Scott (Tara) Tanton, Sherri (Bill) Harris, and Allan Hallett both of Shelburne Co., Joyce Chevalier (Rod Hall) Stewiacke. Rev. Nancy Ritchie, Merrickville, Ont., her family Ian, Vancouver, Joel (Sheryl) Dauphinee, Windsor, great grandchildren, David , Benjamin and Nathaniel Tanton, Taylor, Lana, Logan, Chelsea, Dauphinee, Jared and Taylor Hallett, Jacki and Jordan Harris, also survived by three sisters, Kay Love, Colorado, Mary (Clyde) Faulkner, Ethel Lowe, both of California. Three sister in law, Shirley Ritchie, Halifax, Jean Clarke, Kingston, Catherine Holden, Jordon Falls Nova Scotia, numerous nephews and nieces, extended family and friends. Doug was predeceased by sister Frances Owen, Marg McNeil, brothers Cecil, Robert (Bob), Harold, and Clifford Ritchie. Please join family and friends for a memorial service to celebrate & honour Doug’s life on April 14th at 2:00pm at the Forest Hills United Church with Rev. Sarah Reaburn officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion - Somme Branch and the Masonic Lodge - Eastern Star No. 51 will be conducting Remembrance services at this time. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donation in memory of Doug can be made to Diabetic Society, Forrest Hills United Church or a charity of personal choice.
