McCOURT, John (Scotty) - passed away peacefully on April 4, 2020 after a two and a half year battle with cancer. John was born August 15, 1931 in Motherwell, Scotland and was the third born of seven siblings. Before immigrating to Canada in 1954, John spent 3 years in the British army. John arrived in Winnipeg and worked in the construction industry for a short time. After a night of pubbing and celebrating, the next morning, bleak and red eyed, John and his buddy enlisted into the Canadian navy and were shuffled off to Esquimalt Naval Base. John often said that the best times of his life were the 10 years in the navy where it was peaceful on the water and was able to travel and see the world. In 1970, John met the love his life Janette and the two had spent the last 50 years together. Those who knew John knew that he lived life on his own terms. In retirement, John spent a great deal of his time building Grandmother and Granddaughter clocks. He loved making the clocks and giving them to family, friends and people in the Port Alberni community. Janette hopes that when you hear the Westminster chimes, you will think of Scotty. John is survived by his wife Janette, brother and sister, several nieces and nephews in Scotland. His Stepson Stephen and his wife Susan, step Grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua. Sincere thanks to Dr. Mohamedali, Dr. Johnsen, home care nurses, Catherine & Margaret, staff at TY Watson House, WCGH and other home care workers that called and supported John and myself (you know who you are) You are THE BEST! The family will have a celebration of Scotty’s life later when socially distancing is no longer required. Family has requested no flowers, In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of John McCourt can be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Ty Watson House (Alberni Hospice), West Coast General Hospital Foundation or your choice of charity.
