EARLE, Michael John - age 81, of Halifax Michael Earle, PhD, passed away November 9, 2020 in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. Born in Charlottetown, PEI, he was the son of the late Jean Ross and C.N. “Clarry” Earle. Mike spent his earliest years in Pictou, his school years in Sydney and his adult years in Toronto, London, England and in Halifax. He is survived by his siblings Mary (Gerald) Bourgeois, Christine (David) MacKinnon, Dennis (Caron), Margaret and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Colin and wife Sharon Anderson. “Big Mike” wore many hats. By turns he was a banker, social worker, unionist, diesel mechanic, carpenter, bookkeeper, teacher, author, Royal Canadian Naval Reservist, painter, singer, chess and bridge player and animal lover. However, his lifelong passion was the study of history and he returned to university, achieved his doctorate and taught history at Dalhousie, St Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent Universities. He was an active member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3912. He was a human rights activist, had concerns with housing issues and was involved in socialist movements in the U.K. and Canada. Mike also loved travel and made many trips throughout Europe over the years. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. Private interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or charity of one’s choice. Thank you to the staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax for their care of Mike over the past two years.
