GROUT, Frederick Ernest (Fred) - 74, of Dartmouth, passed away on September 4, 2020 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Medicine Hat, Alta., he was the son of the late Frederick and Helen (Lay) Grout. Fred served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 23 years. His second career was another 22 years with the Custodial Department of the Halifax Regional School Board. He was an avid sports fan. He loved the New York Rangers and the Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed playing squash with his buddy Tommy. He enjoyed country music, in particular Charlie Pride and Smiley Bates. He loved fast food, especially A&W and his last request was to have a taste of Root Beer. Fred is survived by his sons, Gerard (Heather), Gary (Gayle), both of Dartmouth; stepdaughters, Carolynn, Christina, and Cathelene MacLeod; grandchildren, Kristen, Timothy, Justin, and Camrynn; great-grandchildren, Emma and Henry. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen (Arvind) Patil, and Elizabeth Mueller. He was predeceased by his wife and best friend in life, Eileen MacLeod. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The War Amps.
