In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HENDERSON, John Harold - beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away at his home in Kanata, Ontario on June 5, 2020. John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 11, 1927 and grew up on the family farm outside Craik, Saskatchewan. His prairie roots, especially his growing up during the Depression, deeply influenced his values and how he lived his life. He was predeceased by his wife Florence Henderson; his son Ross Henderson; his parents Andrew and Josephine Henderson; and his brothers Warren and Donald ( Fran). He is survived by his children Elaine, Sue ( Bill) Turner and Mike ( Jo-Anne, deceased); his granddaughters Paula, Tracy, Jennie, Kate, Beth and Marcela; his great grandchildren Carly, Lindsey, Brooke, Evan, Quinn, Emily, Anne, Isaiah, Rowan and Daniela; his sisters Marion and Elaine (Glenn, deceased) Stevenson; and his many nieces and nephews. John was proud to have served in the military ( Royal Canadian Navy) for 30 years (1946-1976) in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Arbroath, Scotland; Shearwater, Nova Scotia; Ottawa, Ontario and Cold Lake, Alberta, He enjoyed another 12 years working with the Department of National Defense in Calgary, Alberta. He retired in 1988 and he and his wife, Florence spent many happy years taking road trips to their Florida home, visiting their children and friends across Canada and camping at Fitzroy Harbour and upstate New York. We kids remember the family camping trips, the trek from Shearwater to Craik and to campgrounds in the Maritimes, with a fondness and an appreciation for that introduction to the fun, effort and excitement of the road trip. He will be remembered for his strength of character, his fierce independence and his love of Florence and their family. His granddaughters and great-grandchildren will always treasure the interest which he showed in them, their lives, and his love for them. He brought joy into our lives and he will be deeply missed. A private interment was held at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa on June 11, 2020. Florence, his loving wife, passed in April 2020 and we will gather, when possible, to celebrate the lives of this wonderful and thoughtful man, of our much loved mother and their 72 years of marriage. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
