Alan Roy Stewart

STEWART, Alan Roy - of Dartmouth. On June 10, 2020, Alan Roy Stewart passed away in Dartmouth General Hospital ICU, at the age of 78. Alan was born in Yarmouth on May 8, 1942. He was a son of Harold and Dorothy (Stewart/Roy). Alan is survived by his long-time partner, Michael Sangster; brother, Robert Stewart (wife Jackie); sister-in-law, Joyce; several nieces and nephews. Alan was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Douglas. Alan received his early education in Yarmouth and at Riverdale Collegiate in Toronto, Ont. As a teenager, he joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Chebogue rising to become an Officer/Instructor. He sang in Central United Church Choir and was organist at Faith United Church. Alan played trombone in the Yarmouth Citizen's Band and served as their president for three years. In 1962, Alan entered the pretheology programme at Mount Allison University receiving a BA in Philosophy and History (Class of '65) and a BEd (1966). While at Mount Allison University, Alan directed the Theological Society Chapel Choir, and served on the Student Representative Council. After graduating from University Alan served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Sub Lieutenant for five years. Alan taught at Dartmouth High School for a few years and then moved on to owning a Motor Cycle Shop on Gottingen St. From there he went to the Provincial Court as a Court Clerk until he retired in 2007. Over the years Allan had been active in the NSGEU as a shop steward. In 1983, Alan helped set up the first AIDS Vigil in Halifax. Alan was an active member of GAE, GALA and Grace United Church in Dartmouth. Services will be held at a later date. Dona tions can be made to Grace United Church in Dartmouth or the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to Dartmouth Funeral Home, Queen Street.
