George A. Friis

Chief Petty Officer, Signalman, 19549-H, RCN / C.A.F.

Died: 02 May 2020, Halifax, Nova Scotia

FRIIS, George A. - With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our devoted husband, exceptional father, proud grampy and great-grampy on May 2, 2020 in Halifax. George grew up in Ontario and came to Nova Scotia as a navy recruit to Cornwallis where shortly after, met the love of his life, Maureen to whom he was married for almost 65 years. George was in the Navy for 22 years serving all over the world as well as the Korean War. He kept in touch with many of his Navy buddies and organized many reunions over the years. He also worked at Western Furniture, the Halifax Dartmouth Bridge Commission and Sylvania Lighting. George always had time to listen, lend a helping hand and to try to make everyone feel special with a smile, joke or a story. He was a rare gentleman and always put everyone else's needs before his own. He had a strong faith and was very active in St. Philip's Church for many years and recent member of Trinity United. He was a regular volunteer at Hope Cottage. George put his talents into his vegetable gardens and always had some kind of project on the go, either at home or the cottage. He loved to have his family come over for supper or just a visit with "a hot cuppa tea". He will forever be loved and missed by his wife, Maureen, Halifax; daughters, Cindy Harley (David Williamson), Kentville; Heidi Friis (Darrell Lundrigan), Hatchet Lake; grandchildren, Jason Harley (Erin), Toronto; Jenna Bradley (Nathan), Kentville; Amanda Lundrigan, Dartmouth; and Bryan Lundrigan (Carolyn Lindell), Louisiana; great-grandchildren, George, Logan and Declan; and his Ontario family: sister, Marnie Mardlin (Ken); brother, Bev Friis (Marianne); many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Sheila Friis. Cremation has taken place and memorial service at a later date. Online condolences may be made to Donald K. Walker Funeral Directors, Dartmouth. In memory of George donations may be made to Hope Cottage.
