Died: 28 Mar 2020, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

SMITH, Gerald Burton (Gerry) - Passed away March 28, 2020 in QEII Health Sciences Centre. With sad hearts we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father and grandfather. Born September 30, 1921, a son of Lawrence and Ola (Mosher) Smith (Darmouth). He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Madelyn (Lovett); son, Larry (Anne), Harrigan Cove; daughter, Karen (Art) Doherty, Dartmouth; sister, Joan Lydiard, Dartmouth; brother, Ross, Harrigan Cove; grandchildren, Darlene, Sherry and Jeff (Natalie). Predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Roy, Laurie, Earle and Carl. He had recently graduated from Dartmouth High School at 18 with plans for his future when news war was about to break out. He felt it was every man's duty to defend his country and he joined the navy RCNVR in 1939 until war's end in 1945. He had six years sailing on five ships on the Transatlantic Convoy. During a trip home he met and married the love of his life Madelyn. At war's end he began work as a civilian personnel manager at bases Shearwater, Gagetown, N.B., Dockyard and Maritime Command. He retired in 1983 and was very active in the church, Waverley Legion, community affairs, and travelling around beautiful Nova Scotia in the motorhome, also the United States and many other areas. Cremation has taken place in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.
