Joseph T. (Ted) Chiasson, C.D.

Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, RCN / C.A.F.

Born: 07 Feb 1941, Baie Sainte Anne, New Brunswick

Died: 01 Apr 2020, Whites Lake, Nova Scotia

CHIASSON, Joseph T. (Ted) - Queen's Jubilee, CD with 2 clasps, sadly sailed away April 1, 2020 at his home in Whites Lake, Halifax at the age of 79. He was born to Albert and Eva (Mazerolle) Chiasson on February 7, 1941 in Baie Sainte Anne, N.B., where he was the oldest of 14 children. At the age of 17, he left the community to join the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for 38 years until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed a successful career, travelled the world and received several awards for his service. He met and married his wife Sheila (Whitman) in Halifax. During his naval career he served on several ships as Hull Technician and was based in Halifax, Victoria and Shelburne. He and Sheila eventually settled in Whites Lake where he retired. He could always be found outside, in the woods, near a lake or near the ocean. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and a clever handyman. It was always said that if Joe couldn't fix it in his garage, it was unfixable. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Whitman); his daughters: Denise (Mike) Shellnutt and Angela (Iain) Hopkinson; his loving grandchildren: Benjamin, Olivia and Sammy; brothers: Rheal (Anne), Albert (Judy), Maynard (Linda), Charles (Stella); sisters: Tina (Allie), Velma, Margaret (Mike), Gisele (Mike), Betty (Alonzo), Carol (Ed), Charline. He was predeceased by his grandson, Nicholas who was his best friend; brothers: Alphonse, Jean Paul, and Gerald. We will all miss his sense of humour, tales of his naval service and growing up in "The Baie", and of course, his red suspenders. Cremation has taken place and a private gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to The Lung Association Nova Scotia or charity of your choice. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 08 Apr 2020)
