Laurie served in HMCS Matapedia in 1941-42 and in HMCS Port Arthur in 1942-43. Later in the war I believe that he served in the Arctic escorting ships to Russia on the Murmansk run. After the war Laurie built a fishing resort and cabins at Orient Bay on Lake Nipigon. He also had quite a large cabin cruiser the Laurie "A" and took guests fishing on Lake Nipigon. Laurie had a keen interest in ships throughout his life. After they retired, he and his wife Joan often used to take a picnic lunch and go down to the docks in Thunder Bay and watch the salties that were in port being loaded.
