Gilbert was born in Port Morien, NS to Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier on 30 Jul 1922. He served in the Navy from 1940 to 1945. He married Joyce Carabin and they lived in Glace Bay, NS. He was survived by his wife. Gilbert is buried in the Saint Mary's Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS.
