In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MacDONALD, John Robert Hubert (Hub) - age 81, of Bridgewater, passed away August 22, 2019 at home. Born in Halifax, to the late John and Rachel (Roberts) MacDonald, Hub was known for his charismatic personality and voracious gift of gab! Upon graduating from Armdale High School, Hub went on to enlist with the R.O.T.C. while attending St. Mary's University and enjoyed his time in the Navy. He began his working life with Texaco and retired after 22 years with the Federal Government. He was heavily involved with the Union and served as local President and as National Vice President of Nova Scotia for several years. Once retired, Hub became an active Volunteer, receiving countless awards for his tireless service, including the Representative Volunteer Award for the Town of Bridgewater in 2005. Hub also served as president of the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society for several years. Hub was an avid sports fan and one of his greatest delights was coaching hockey. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 58 years, Joan (Shelley) Mac Donald; daughters, Shelley (Robert) Oakley of Bridgewater; Catherine (Dan) Lloyd of Calgary; Deborah MacDonald of Upper LaHave; son, David (Shannon Wade) of Halifax; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jack, Megan, Carolyn and Zoe. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, August 29th with a Memorial Service on Friday, August 30th at 2 p.m., both in Bridgewater United Church, 87 Hillcrest St., Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bridgewater United Church or your favourite charity would be appreciated. (Halifax Chronicle Herald 27 Aug 2019)
