Lawrence Whitman Fevens

Died: 15 Mar 2009, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

FEVENS, Lawrence Whitman - 93, passed away peacefully into his savior’s waiting arms on Sunday March 15, 2009, in Camp Hills Veterans’ Memorial Building, Halifax, surrounded by his faithful nurses. Born February 21, 1916, in Overton, he was a son of the late Archie Fevens and Georgina (Killam) Fevens. He attended school in Overton, and left school at the end of grade eight and went fishing with his dad. After several years he went to work in Ontario, with Dominion Bridge Company. In 1939, he joined the Merchant Marines until the war broke out. On June 23, 1939, he joined the Navy as RCNR as seaman. In 1940 he was made a stoker and in a short time became Second Engineer. He served on cable ships, minesweepers and ammunition ships. Receiving PO was a Motor Mechanic. He was involved in putting fire out that occurred after an ammunitions explosion in Bedford. He left the Navy December 26, 1945, and went to the Northwest Territories and became Chief Engineer with the Hudson Bay Fleet of boats, towing barges with supplies. In 1949, he returned to Yarmouth and began a job with Nova Scotia Light and Power on diesel. In 1950 he met and married Nellie Elizabeth (Betty) Churchill. He attended Overton Baptist Church while he lived in Yarmouth. In 1951 his first child, Helen was born. In 1953 he transferred to the power station on Water Street, Halifax and in 1954, Enid was born. In 1956 he moved to Dartmouth. During his career with NSLP, he was an operator on turbines, supervisor and became a Training Supervisor of apprentices, in newly named Nova Scotia Power Corporation, and later promoted to Trainer Specialist over at the Nova Scotia Power Plants. His job involved training for Steam Plants leading to get Fourth, Third an Second Class tickets. In 1977 he retired and moved back to Overton to look after his wife’s parents, and stayed in his new home until his wife’s parents passed away, followed by his wife, Betty in December 1984. During his life in Yarmouth he was actively involved in Faith Memorial Baptist Church. He stayed in an apartment in Yarmouth after he left his home. Then in 1987 he moved to Windsor. He moved to Acadia Place in Dartmouth in1993 and he moved to Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building in2002 and remained there until his death. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Dartmouth when he moved to Dartmouth in 1951, where he was a Deacon, Church Treasurer and was on the Nominating Board for Ordination of new minister’s with Atlantic Baptist Convention. His Lord and his faith were number one in his life and this came out when he had opportunity to do Sunday ser-vices. He sang, played guitar and mouth organ. In Acadia Place and Camp Hill he was involved in memorial services as well as the church services. He could be found taking residents down to the see events at Acadia Place and went once a month to The Nova Scotia Hospital with son-in-law, Andy to do a service of song, scripture and stories. He was an active Member in Regal Road Baptist Church while at Acadia Place. In his long life he gave 70 blood donations, was a member of Royal Canadian Legion and two years ago received a 60 year legion pin. He was also at one time a member of IOOF and Odd Fellows. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by daughters, Helen (Jim) Ashley, Lantz; Enid (Andy) Elliot, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Liz (Karl) D’Angio, New Lowell, Ont.; Andrew (Jen) Ashley, Nine Mile River; Loran (Stephanie Moroney) Ashley, Halifax; Erin (Nathan) Elliot-Doucet, Korea; Darcy (Roger Gillis) Elliot, Halifax, and Evan (Nicole Holland) Elliot, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Kaden D’Angio, New Lowell; brother, Archie (Mildred) Fevens, Yarmouth; sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Overton; Seretha, Overton; Josephine, Yarmouth; numerous nieces and nephews. Hewas predeceased by wife, Betty; father-in-law, Steve and wife, Winola; father Archie and mother, Georgina; brothers, Wardlow and wife; Glen, Hugh and wife Clara, Guy, Ernest, Malcom and wife, Helen, and Gerald; sisters, Amelia and husband, Calvin and Nellie and husbands, Edward and Lloyd; great-granddaughter, Brooke Ashley. He will missed by his family and many friends. We would like to give a special thanks to the Staff on 5 West for their love and care of our dad, especially the nurses who were there at his passing. Thank you to his many friend, doctors, clergy, Rec Staff and Florence. God Bless You All. Our father is in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. A Legion Memorial Service and visitation was held Thursday, March 19. Funeral was held in First Baptist Church, 100 Ochterloney St., Dartmouth, Friday, March 20. A reception followed in the church hall. Pastor Peter Sherwood and Rev. Pattie McKenna officiated. The interment will take place at a later date in Yarmouth at Cheggogen Cemetery. Donations can be made to Unicef For Kids, Canadian Bible Society or a charity of your choice. “May The Lord Bless and Keep You, May The Lord Watch Over You Until We Meet Again.. Be at Peace Dad.
