Norman Clair Steeves

RCN / C.A.F.

Died: 16 Jun 2019, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

STEEVES, Norman Clair - passed away at home, with his loving wife of 60 years by his side, on June 16, 2019 in Dartmouth. Born in Berry Mills, N.B., Norman was a son of the late Vincent and Ruth (Duffy) Steeves. Norman ventured to Nova Scotia and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1952 where he served 26 years and saw much of the world by ship. After retiring from the Navy, Norman worked at the Coastguard for Transport Canada. An avid hunter and fisherman, Norman loved to play and watch softball, and was a hockey player and coach in his younger years. Norman loved telling stories of his travels, sports and life on the farm, and was a lifelong learner and teacher of the knowledge he cultivated over the years. He was a member of Woodlawn United Church. "Dad" enjoyed spending time with his sons, Stephen and Larry and daughter-in-law, Darlene, and talking about the renovations being done at the family farmhouse with his daughter Lana and son-in law Kim. He took pride in preserving traditions during the holidays. The family will forever remember the singing bird in the Christmas tree and Santa and Mrs. Clause, two traditions that brought big smiles to everyone. In his later years, Norman enjoyed walks, following his sports teams, and visits with family. He loved making the great-grandchildren laugh and did so right up until his last days, as the family gathered to celebrate his 85th on June 12, 2019. An avid gardener, "Grampy" grew his seeds indoors and sowed them every year, sharing his harvest with the whole family. This year, after fighting a courageous battle with COPD, Norman, who was the last living of his siblings, passed on to join sister Annie, brothers, Walter (Pearl), Dewey (Helen), Ronald, Ralph, Eldon (Shirley), Harold, and Donald; mother, Ruth and father, Vincent, and brothers-in-law, Jack, Irwin, Vince and John in the garden of angels. Norman will be sadly missed by wife, Ruth (Quelch); son, Stephen (Deborah); twins, Lana (Kim) and Larry (Darlene); grandchildren, Richard (Corey), Julie (Justin), Sarah (Mark) and Brittany (Matt); great-grandchildren, Peyton, Janie, Annika, Isabelle, Hazel and Norah; sisters-in-law, Dot, Joan, Betty, Audrey and Mae, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22nd at 2 p.m. in Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton, N.B. (506-858-1995) with Rev. David Way leading the service. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Interment will follow in Steeves Mountain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made in Norman's memory to Steeves Mountain Cemetery, Berry Mills, N.B. or Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth.
