Charles Edwin Baird

Died: 04 May 2019, Halifax, Nova Scotia

BAIRD, Charles Edwin - Veteran, drummer, volunteer, gardener, loved by all, passed away on May 4, 2019 at the age 89 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Charlie grew up in River Hebert, son of Inez (Smith) and Billy Baird. When he was 14, he joined the Reserve Army and then the Reserve Navy. Three days before he was to be deployed, the Second World War ended. He then moved back to the farm for two years before moving to Streetsville, Ont. Most interesting because he worked for Avro, working on the Avro CF100's and the famous Avro Arrow. He eventually moved with his family back to the Maritimes. His main profession was in the finance industry. He retired in 1996 and became a commissionaire. He then became a volunteer with over 20 years' service for the ER Departments at both the QEII Health Sciences Centre and then Cobequid Health Centre. He was also very active with the Ostomy Association earning the Burleigh Wile, the Unsung Hero, and the Meritorious Service Awards. He played in several bands, most recently The All Time Favourites Band. He kept in touch with his River Hebert buddies, meeting several times a year. He is survived by his son, Corey; daughter, Deborah D'Ambroise; grand-children, Todd, Jason, Danielle D'Ambroise, Marty Frizzell, Mac-adam and Taylor. He had ten great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was predeceased by his beautiful wife, Evelyn (Carmichael); and sons, Billy and David. He also had two brothers that died in infancy. Visiting will be held on Tuesday, May 14th, 6-8 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, Lower Sackville. Funeral Service will be in Knox United Church on Wednesday, May 15th at 1 p.m., followed by reception at Dad's place. Burial will take place at 1 p.m., May 17th in River Hebert. Memorial donations may be made to Knox United Church or the Halifax Chapter of the Ostomy Association. We'd like to send special thanks to all the nurses and doctors for their many years of helping dad survive. (Halifax Chronicle Herald 10 May 2019)
