Died: 19 Nov 1993, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

SMITH, Charles Gordon - 75, Halifax, died November 18, 1993, in Camp Hill Medical Centre, Halifax. Born in Bedford, he was a son of the late Ralph and Mary Elizabeth (Tobin) Smith. He was a veteran of the Second World War; former choir member at St. Philip's Anglican Church, Halifax; former member of the Corps of Commissionaires with the Halifax Dartmouth Bridge Commission; member and former past master of Keith's Masonic Lodge and member of Royal Canadian Legion, Scotia Branch, obtaining his 40-year service pin. He was self-employed for many years, operating Argyle Garage; 100 Sackville St. Fina service station and the Dutch Village Road Fina service station. He was employed with Scotia Chevrolet Oldsmobile for many years and the Lord Nelson Hotel, Halifax. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Covey; daughter, Debra Ann (Mrs. Everett Bower), Lower Sackville; two sons, Gordon Dennis, Lower Sackville; Dennis Charles, Dartmouth; two sisters, Florence Miller, Pickering, Ont.; Edna Smith, Halifax; nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, Halifax, where a legion service will be 7 p.m. tonight and also a masonic service, and from where funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in their chapel, Rev. Don Ruggles officiating. Burial will follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nova Scotia Lung Association. According to the 1921 Nova Scotia Census, Charles was 2 years of age.  His father was Ralph Edward Smith (born in the USA), his mother was Mary Elizabeth Tobin.  He was 23 years of age when he married Ella Pearl Allen on 14 Oct 1941 at Halifax.  Ella was born in 1922 in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS. She died on 20 Sep 1946. She was survived by Charles and their infant child.  When Charles and Ella married he was serving at HMCS Protector, a RCN shore base at Sydney, NS.  Charles re-married to Mary Elizabeth Covey.
