NEWLAND, Leonard Charles (Lenny) - Aged 98, Leonard C. “Lenny” Newland passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born May 7, 1928, in Preston, Ontario, he was the son of the late Albert James and Beatrice Anita (Scheidel) Newland.
Lenny began his military career at the age of 16 when he joined the Reserves with the Highland Light Infantry. He proudly served from June 26, 1944 – January 9, 1950, and was released with the rank of Acting Sergeant. He continued his military service with the Royal Canadian Navy, serving from March 21, 1952, until December 9, 1975, when he retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. Following his naval career, Lenny continued his work in public service as a DND Civil Servant, where he worked as a Level 10 in Quality Control.
Throughout his life, Lenny was active in many organizations. He was a Past Master of Royal Standard Lodge 398; a 32nd Degree Mason of Scottish Rite and a Life Member of the Royal Order of Buffalo. His years of dedication in time and effort in his community made him very worthy of receiving a Life Membership with the Royal Canadian Legion.
Lenny is survived by his daughter, Lorraine Barber of California, USA, as well as many friends and comrades.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen (Williams); his daughter, Heather Hubley; son, James; brother, Edward and sisters, Shirley Hobler and Geraldine Walker.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A Celebration of Lenny’s Life including a Legion Service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 2. to 4 p.m. in Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, 35 Empire Lane, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0.
