In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
DAY, Auriel Gilbert Thomas - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Auriel Gilbert Thomas Day, age 93, of Sheet Harbour, on Monday, September 7, 2026, at his home.
Born May 19, 1933, in Popes Harbour, Auriel was the son of the late Walter and Beulah (Gerrard) Daye.
Auriel spent several years serving in the Navy before beginning a career with Fairey Aviation. He later moved to Sheet Harbour, where he worked with Nova Scotia Power until his retirement in 1991.
In his earlier years, Auriel enjoyed hunting and fishing, but one of his greatest pleasures was working in his gardens. In his later years, he discovered a love of cooking and woodworking, spending many happy hours working on various projects. He was a skilled and hardworking man who helped build four camps on the Mooseland Road.
Auriel and his beloved wife, Catherine “Kay,” delivered the Chronicle Herald for many years. Together, they also opened their home to many boarders. Auriel treasured those years and could often be found sharing fond stories and memories of the many people who had become part of their lives.
He will be deeply missed by his son, Michael (Maggi), Edmonton; daughter, Laura (Mike) Mansfield, Halifax; grandchildren, Kylee, Mick, Tia, Stephanie, Christopher, and Vanessa; great-grandchildren, Ava and Weston; sister, Joan (Roy) Landry, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews.
Auriel was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Catherine “Kay”; daughter, Darlene; son, Marty; sister, Pauline Luiken; and brothers, Cyril and Boyd.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Sheet Harbour, with Father Promise officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will be held afterward at the Sheet Harbour Legion.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Auriel’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Auriel will be remembered for his hard work, his love of family, his many stories, and the kindness he showed to those who crossed his path. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. (D.S. Crowell & Son Funeral Home)
