Alexander Sydney Lumsden

Petty Officer 2nd Class, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 10 Feb 1929, Greater Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada

Died: 14 Sep 2026, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

LUMSDEN, Alexander Sydney - age 97, of Parkland Clayton Park, formerly of Lantz, NS. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alex on September 14, 2026. Born on Chaplin Road in Greater Miramichi, NB, he was the son of the late Sydney and Amanda Lumsden (née Flieger).

Alex served 25 years in the Navy including service in the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, he went on to work at Wilson Equipment for several years and then finished his working career at Nova Scotia Sand & Gravel. Alex also became active in his local community after his military service. He joined the Upper Nine Mile River Volunteer Fire Department and later became a trustee with Nine Mile River Community Center.

Dad was an unassuming but devoted family man who was always among the first to volunteer and help others in any way he could. He filled his life with enjoyment, whether it was the Saturday night dances and hosted get-togethers or his (in)famous Christmas Eve yodeling along to Wilf Carter’s Christmas album. Dad piloted the way on many camping and road trips, whose memories could rival a scene from National Lampoon’s Vacation. He enjoyed backyard washer toss, cheering on his Montreal Canadiens and any card game you put in front of him. At home, he could usually be found tinkering in his garage or in Al’s Place, a shed devoted to taking things apart and (occasionally) putting them back together again.

Dad danced through most of his life with our Mom, Joyce Lumsden, his lifelong dance partner and wife of 65 years. Deeply devoted to one another, they made sure to start and end each day with a kiss and are now forever resting together.

Alex is survived by his 5 children, Cindy Mielke, Bedford, Steve (Karen), Sackville, Sherry Miller (Neil), Lantz, Karen Peters (Hammond), PE, Glen (Cheri), Ottawa; grandchildren, Amy Mielke-Jerrett (Pat), Richard, Jeremy, Caitlin Lumsden, Ryan (Alex) & Kyle Miller, Kylee Peters, Grace & John Lumsden and great granddaughter Maisie, numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents he was predeceased by his loving wife, Joyce; his son-in-law, Don Mielke; brothers, Robert, Fred, Bill, Herbert, Lloyd, Eldon, Vincent, David and half brother Doug; sisters, Annie, Leone, Mable and Dot.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Parkland Clayton Park for the care and compassion they provided Dad over the past three years.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Donations in Alex’s memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia and PEI or to a charity of your choice. (Ettinger Funeral Home)
