In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
NEWSOME, George Everard - Peacefully, on Friday, October 3, 2003, after a lengthy battle with cancer, George passed away at the St. Boniface General Hospital, in Winnipeg, MB, at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his beloved wife Maureen; son Paul; daughters, Angie (Jimmy) and June (Darrell) of Nanaimo, B.C.; grandson Brad (Anndrea); granddaughter Marnie (Ryan); great- grandson Ryland; sister Mable (Ted); son- in-law Gerry; brothers-in-law Tony (Pat) of Halifax, David (Claire) and Dennis (Maureen); sisters-in-law Joan, Betty and family; nephews Chris and Geoff; Harry 'my friend'; as well as relatives in Ottawa and numerous relatives and friends in England. George loved England and Maureen's family. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Cathy, sister Mary and parents George and Mary Newsome. George was born on September 26, 1925 in Kamloops, B.C. and spent his early childhood in Brandon, MB. He attended St. Paul's High School from 1939-43, and then joined the R.C.N.V.R. He served on HMCS 'Tillsonburg' in convoy escort Group C6 on the 'Newfie Derry' run. After discharge he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1949. His working years were spent at Hudson's Bay Co. as a Buyer, Holt Renfrew as General Manager, and Success Commercial College as an Instructor and Director of Placement. Retirement gave George and Maureen time to do some well-deserved travelling, as well as spend quality time together and with their families and friends. He enjoyed his bowling, cooking, reading, 'special projects' and his White Ensign buddies. He was famous for his 'lists' of things for everyone to do, and had a great sense of humour. He delighted in practical jokes. Above all else, he was a generous, kind, caring and considerate person. We will miss him dearly. A celebration of George's life will be held on Wednesday, October 8 at 133 Niakwa Road – 17th Floor (Appleton Estates) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our family would like to thank the staff on 5B and 5E at the St. Boniface General Hospital, especially to the staff of 5E for all the hugs and support; a special hug for Jeanette, and to Pat (Palliative Care Nurse). Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in George's memory to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 or to a charity of one's choice.
