William Edward Letcher

Died: 01 Oct 2002, Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada

 

LETCHER, William Edward - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Edward Letcher, 81, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Cape, Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

 

A resident of 105 Windsor St., Sydney, he was born in Inverness, Cape Breton, son of the late Arthur R. and Annie M. (Judson) Letcher.

 

A veteran of the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, serving on the HMCS Ontario in the Atlantic and South Pacific theatres. Cited for "outstanding service to the nation" in 1967, he was awarded the Centennial Medal of Canada.

 

He retired from the Department of National Defence in 1975. He returned to work for the Department of Education (vocational) and taught power engineering at AVTC retiring in 1982 due to ill health.

 

A devoted and loving husband, he will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, the former Olive Roberta (Crozier-Smith).

 

Ted was happiest when surrounded by his family, daughters, Linda (Bill) MacNeil, Sydney, and Karen (Roy) MacDonald, Sydney River; grandchildren, Lori (Neil) Bates, Timberlea, Karen (David) MacGillivray, Halifax, Kimberley (Jeff) Brown, North Sydney, Jennifer (Trevor) Gordon, Dartmouth, Melissa MacDonald, Ottawa, and Mark MacDonald, Sydney; great-grandchildren, Ceilidh, Ryan and Breagh Bates, Nicholas Gordon and Patrick MacGillivray; brothers, Arthur, Howie Centre, Frank, Fort Simpson, and Walter; and sister, Betty Romard, Sydney.

 

He was predeceased by brother, Daniel and stepmother, Margaret Letcher.

 

As was his request, cremation has taken place.

 

The family will receive condolences at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.

 

Private family burial will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

 

Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Palliative Care or charity of one's choice.
