In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
KEARNS, George Richard - With deep love and gratitude, the family announces the peaceful passing of George “Richard” Kearns, surrounded by family at the Halifax Infirmary on Saturday, April 11, 2026. After a brief battle with cancer, he went home to the Lord, whom he faithfully served. His life was deeply rooted in service, and he will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.
Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, Richard was the beloved son of Melville and Edith (Alexander) Kearns. Big brother to sister Mary “Jeanne” and the late Thomas “Randolph”, younger brother to the late “Robert” John Alexander. He belonged to a close-knit family of many aunts and uncles, each contributing to memories that will be forever cherished.
Richard heeded the call to serve his country, travelling to the East Coast where he arrived at CFB Cornwallis for basic training, marking the beginning of a remarkable naval career. He served on many naval ships and in numerous land postings, including Fleet School, Junior Leadership, and Sea Training. Among his many accomplishments, he trained the Queen Mother’s Battalion and became the first Coxswain of HMCS Halifax. In May 1993, he was invested with the Order of Military Merit, awarded for conspicuous merit and exceptional service in the Canadian Armed Forces. He also achieved the esteemed rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class. Bravo Zulu.
Although the sea held a special place in his heart, his greatest love was always for his beloved wife of 58 years, Judith Arlene (Grose) Kearns of Lower Sackville, a true love story for the ages, and his devoted daughter, Trudy-Ann Ritter (Kevin) of Fall River. He was a proud Grandpa to Alexander Pickrem (Aliscia) Fall River & Jonathan Pickrem (Taylor) Waverley ; he loved them beyond measure and could always be found driving to a rink, sports field, organizing a project, enjoying time at the trailer, grabbing a coffee, or listening to music. He will be fondly remembered by nieces Karen, Lisa, Kathryn and nephews Robert, Jeffrey, Matthew and Tim. Special Grandpa to Kelsey (Izzy), Meghan (Tim) and Great Grandpa to Zephyr.
Richard served his church community of St. Francis by the Lakes by being involved in various committees, fundraising projects and held the position of warden for many years, giving his time and talents in any way possible. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion 08-162 Calais Branch, Lower Sackville and a past member of Bedford Senior Leisure Club, a furniture repair and restoration shop that gave back to the community with funds raised.
He will be deeply missed by his neighbours, friends, and extended family. A man of steadfast character, he was known for his firm handshake and the belief that one’s word was a bond—true hallmarks of a life well lived.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at The Halifax Infirmary 7.1, whose kindness, compassion and caring will always be remembered.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. at St. Francis by the Lakes Church, 192 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville. A Celebration of Life will follow on Saturday, April 18, at 1:00 p.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Francis by the Lakes or a charity of your choice. (Maritime Cremation Centre)
